Monitoring Where and How to Take Action
Overview
Benchmarking allows you to directly compare vehicles, drivers, and departments. / iStock, 2008.Fleet benchmarking programs enable comparison of fleet performance by vehicle, employee, and/or department, both within and between local governments, revealing opportunities to improve fuel efficiency and overall performance. They provide a strong basis for goal setting and insight into strategies for fleet management. Comparison can be done for any given number of indicators, including fuel efficiency, preventative maintenance and repair costs, and employee idling. Benchmarking helps fleet managers understand where to take action and how to improve fleet performance.
Benefits
Benchmarking allows fleet managers to easily identify the following:
- Activities resulting in reduced GHG emissions and related pollutants.
- Top and poor performing vehicles, employees, and/or departments.
- Green fleet action plan elements that are succeeding.
- Where and how to take action to improve fuel efficiency.

- HOW
Once developed, benchmarking programs are one of the most powerful tools in a fleet manager’s toolbox.
Benchmarking programs start with the development of a fuel data management system. Once in place, you can review key figures that indicate how to target your fleet programs and where problems are occurring.
A benchmarking program will allow you to better design purchasing strategies, idling reduction initiatives, and preventative maintenance programs.Benchmarking programs allow you to take the following steps:
- Relate fuel consumption to business outputs.
- Calculate average fuel consumption as an internal benchmark.
- Identify high and low performing vehicles, employees, and/or departments.
- Review results and identify cost and performance improvements.
With this information, you will be able to identify how to improve performance. These steps should be repeated regularly.
With E3 Fleet, benchmarking can be done against other fleets across the country.
